Another Key
Factor in Advice
From George Washington Against Political Parties
In his farewell address to America George Washington gave loving fatherly advice
to this fledgling country that he helped give birth to.
Of the many inspired statements which Washington made those in which he
spoke of political parties seem most appropriate as we consider America’s
drift away from Constitutional Law. “In contemplating the causes which may disturb
our Union,” Washington counseled
strongly against the formation of political parties.
At the onset he advised against parties based on geographical
distinction. Thereafter Washington
warned us “in the
most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the Spirit of Party,
generally.” It is by
this means that “cunning,
ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the Power of the
People, and to usurp for themselves the reins of Government…” In
addition Washington said that, “The
disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek
security and repose in the absolute power of an Individual; and sooner or later
the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his
competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the
ruins of Public Liberty.” (George Washington’s Farewell Address -
1796) Washington’s
Prophesies On Political Parties Fulfilled
George Washington’s warnings against the party spirit based on geography are
most prophetic with respect to the Civil War.
A careful review of our nation’s history further shows the great
insight which Washington had. Indeed,
today as we view the cumulative corruption of Constitutional Law in America we
are faced with the tragic reality of those very things which Washington had
warned us against. Political
Parties Used By Powerful Money Interests to Control America
Washington spoke of a variety of “baneful effects” of
political parties. Although we have not yet seen individuals rise fully to the
status of tyrant, we have seen presidents, agencies, and justices usurp power
which is not Constitutional. It
would seem that America is driven and controlled by much less visible tyrants in
the form of powerful money interests. A
corrupt system of election laws have formulated so as to allow powerful money
interests to finance those candidates and elected officials who are willing to
return favors. The
ethics of a Congressman receiving campaign contributions from outside of his
district is no different than the President of the United States receiving
campaign contributions from the Communist Chinese. Until the power to
elect representatives is taken from powerful money interests (PAC’s) and
restored to the people, it is unlikely that we will ever achieve our hopes to
truly safeguard right to life, preserve U.S. Sovereignty, adhere to
Constitutional principles and promote public morality. In this regard a Bible
verse seems most appropriate: “And
thou shalt take no gift for the gift blindeth the wise and perverteth the words
of the righteous.”
